About We the Builders

We the Builders is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that stands for an effective government that does the most good for the most people who need it the most. We have always worked for you.

Who we are

We are a group of over 30 volunteers who are still working for you. In February 2025, a group of mostly former U.S. Digital Service employees created this site in response to the confusion and fear created by the DOGE and the administration's actions. We are experts in technology and communications and wanted to share our expertise to help explain what was happening.

Since then, we've expanded beyond the U.S. Digital Service and have representatives from 3 agencies and a number of former government employees. Members of our team have made it easier to:

  • File taxes
  • Get veterans' benefits
  • Apply for student financial aid
  • Navigate immigration and refugee processes
  • Find vaccines when we desperately needed them
  • Find baby formula during a crisis
  • Apply for disaster relief
  • Find and fix errors that denied sick children healthcare
  • Find information about voting and congressional districts
  • Access weather data

We use our skills to:

  • Explain how to navigate the complex tax system
  • Communicate complex policies in languages you understand

We have experience in building things that cross different layers of bureaucracy and government and bridging gaps in places previously uncharted. Our experience allows us to avoid common missteps, and adapt to unexpected challenges. We follow a virtuous cycle of delivering results, building trust and leveraging smaller successes to tackle larger goals and we want to bring that to you.

What we do

We are stepping in to share information where the government has walked away. In difficult times, we have found community and support. We are generating hope, optimism, and agency. We want to do more for people in every part of government.

We the Builders content

We keep the public informed and engaged through consistent, high-quality content with:

Newsroom for alternative institutions

Do you miss government information on public health, spreading diseases, weather and climate, or disaster warnings? We're already on it!

We are building a newsroom for alternative government groups. These groups, often current or recent agency employees, want to share longer-form content and reveal what's truly happening behind the scenes at their agencies. These groups play an important role in places worldwide where democracy is eroding and we are supporting them with a platform.

Agency Scorecard

Struggling withchanges at the agencies you depend on? Unsure if you'll get the services you need? We want to help.

We are building a tool that gives you publicly-available metrics for each agency, showing you exactly what's happening. See real data that helps answer questions like these:

  • What are current wait times for services?
  • How long are applications taking to be processed?
  • What services have been cut?
  • Are agency websites accessible? Are they reliable?
